The Warrior

The urgency of his country’s call to duty

was intense and crucial to face a threatening enemy

thousands of miles across the ocean,

To a place strange in its culture,

its religion a mystery

few westerners care to understand,

a people of humility and culture so refined

that his time there would plumb the depth of his mind,

the call was accepted by the brave young soldier

with total and complete loyalty.

The strange land was fierce,

roasting hot dunes of sand,

deltas and rivers making stark contrast

throughout the barren landscape.

Everyone dressed alike, both friend and foe,

no uniforms, impossible to know

who to fight and who to like.

In a language he cannot understand he hears

Shouts! Shouts! Shouts!

Not sure, is it praise or demand?

For their robes large and white

may hold deadly weapons out of sight?

Ever at the gravest of risk,

his weapon is always at the ready.

But where to point?

Who to shoot?

The mystery a challenge

for his presence to be steady.

His uniform often a mark of death,

he stands distinguished from the rest

except his fellow soldiers

who have come to save

a culture they don’t understand.

He hates not

the souls of those he fears.

And it tears deeply at his own soul

knowing that their death

must be his determined goal.

Longing for a friendly smile,

a firm handshake

to be reassured that

friend for foe he will not mistake.

But alas, a friend in the beginning

now a foe since the war he is not winning.

Their hopes dashed; the freedom they sought

with thousands of human lives they bought,

for peace will never be

as defined by the proponents

of the new democracy.

And so the young warrior,

his soul he searches deep

as he struggles to define

how his loyalty he would keep,

and forge ahead for the peace he must find,

For the powers who sent him here

to fight a war that held no fear,

to kill a people innately kind

who never knew a justice that could be blind,

who yearned only for their soul to be secure

from the hatred they had known.

The betrayal that he felt deep in his being

was not by his people or those he was freeing

but by those who lust for power

that would etch their names in eternity.

And his final day came

in a battle that knew no fame

only death with its final release

giving him at last, his eternal peace.

HOPE

Hope

Hope, eternal and faithful,

rises from the ashes,

enduring ages of travail.

It inspires the spirit dashed by despair,

cries out for comfort, for absolution,

from the pain of failure in times past,

and rejoices, with freedom found.

Hope, smiles in eternity.

The Soul

The Soul

Darkness steals,

Light reveals,

The heart feels,

The spirit heals,

The Soul.

A Day

A Day

A day is a window

Open to the world.

Bearing opportunities to see

And choices to make,

It banishes the blackness

And turns the darkness to light.

Humanity awaits the promise it holds.

Hope abounds as enlightenment dawns,

Rising higher with each success,

Sharpened by the failure it encounters along its journey.

As it moves toward the sunset and darkness returns,

One asks,

Where is the day?

The Verse Patch

Indifference

Indifference kills,
A smile thrills,
Praise builds,
Prayer heals,
The spirit.

Selfishness

Selfishness chills,

Honesty instills,

Generosity builds,

Trust gilds,

The bonds of love.

Friendship

Friendship knows

That no debt it owes

For the love it shows

As within it grows

A bond that glows

A Blessing

A blessing is God’s favor.

It opens the window to the heart.

It gives divine passage for His love and Mercy

Borne by the spirit to heal and comfort,

To bring the joy and happiness earned

And soothe the pain deserved.

A blessing heals the heart

And renews the spirit.

It is God’s hand on our shoulder,

His invitation to open our heart

And receive the happiness he bestows,

Adorned with eternal joy.

A  blessing judges  not the  guilty

And favors no culture.

It calms the restless soul

And renews the rested.

A blessing bestowed frees the spirit

And opens the mind to eternal knowledge.

Peace

Peace is not made by war.

It is not made by treaty.

Peace is not mankind’s to give or to take,

Nor is it his to make or to Possess.

Peace is a condition of the soul

and resides in the heart,

Placed there by God to nurture our being.

Peace lives in the heart and soul

of every man and every woman,

In every child and every infant.

Peace is for mankind

 to discover within himself

And to share with those in whom it is lost;

And with love and kindness

to seek a path to the heart of others

And reveal to them the peace that is hidden there.

It is folly to seek to possess

that which resides in the heart of another.

Such treasures exist only for sharing

With the deserving.
